Double Barrel MEH was placed into our privately selected Woodford Double Oak barrel in 2019. It features PNW Marionberries, European Elderberries and wild Huckleberries from Idaho. Some 7 months into aging a vehicle careened into the Meadery penetrating our South wall and damaging the barrel. We quickly transferred the mead to a freshly emptied Blanton’s barrel where it aged for another 7 months.

Dark as night. Oily and coating in the glass. Aromas of elderberry and dark fruit. On the palate; I get elderberry front and center. Ripe dark fruit and some very vinous character enveloping the elderberry. Rather surprisingly; there’s not much if any Bourbon heat despite encountering two barrels. Instead I get that ethyl vanillin character you see in a nice whiskey.

I really enjoy this one; hits all the marks for color, clarity, body, flavor and complexity. If you have a bottle of the original release it will make for a great side by side.
